The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an historical romantic novel that illuminates the real events in Guernsey during World War 2. Juliet Ashton, a London based writer finds herself immersed in a conspiracy of silence by residents on the beautiful Channel Island during Nazi Germany’s occupation. The truth progressively appears through flashbacks to Nazi cruelty and oppression, illicit relationships and betrayal.
For me, the creativity of the Guernsey residents to form a book club as a means to survive the occupation, resonates with our current struggle to maintain social cohesion in the Covid climate.
While the plot is predictable, this feel-good movie, filmed in spectacular scenery was a pleasant distraction, engendering perseverance and hope in the face of adversity.
